Redacted vs Culture Amp

Structured surveys vs. structured conversations.

Culture Amp is best for

Organizations that need industry-benchmarked engagement scores, manager effectiveness tracking, and recurring HR reporting.

Redacted is best for

Organizations where the scores look fine and attrition, underperformance, or cross-functional friction persists anyway.

What Culture Amp genuinely does well

Culture Amp has spent years building one of the most mature employee experience platforms in the market. Their benchmarking database: drawing from thousands of organizations across industries: lets HR teams contextualize their engagement scores against real peers, not just internal baselines.

Their manager effectiveness surveys are thoughtful and well-validated. Their analytics UI is clean enough that a People Ops team can use it without a data analyst. If your primary goal is to produce a defensible engagement report for your board or to run structured manager development programs, Culture Amp is a legitimate, credible choice.

"Sentiment measurement and root-cause diagnosis are different jobs. Culture Amp was built for the first one."

Culture Amp's entire output is built on survey forms: structured questions with scaled responses. That architecture has two hard ceilings. First, employees answer survey questions differently when they know their response is going to a dashboard their manager can request. Second, a 4.2/5 score on "my manager communicates clearly" tells you nothing about whether the ambiguity is happening in 1:1s, in sprint planning, or in cross-functional handoffs.

The decision criteria that matter

Not a feature count. A structural comparison across the dimensions HR buyers actually weigh.

Choose the right tool for the right job

Choose Culture Amp if…

  • You need to benchmark engagement scores against industry peers and report those numbers to a board or executive team
  • Your HR strategy centers on manager development programs requiring structured 360-style data over time
  • You have a People Analytics function that can extract and interpret trend data from engagement scores
  • Your organization has more than 1,000 employees and is willing to invest in a full-featured engagement suite

Choose Redacted if…

  • You've run Culture Amp and your scores look fine while attrition, underperformance, or friction persists
  • You recently went through a restructuring and need to understand what's actually broken: not just how people feel about it  → post-restructuring use case
  • You suspect employees aren't answering surveys honestly: particularly around manager quality
  • You need to act fast: quarterly pulse cycles are too slow for the signal you need right now
  • You want to know what to fix, not just how employees feel

Why a 3-out-of-5 manager effectiveness score tells you nothing actionable

This is not a criticism of Culture Amp specifically. It is a structural critique of what engagement surveys: all of them: can and cannot produce.

The survey produces a number. The number produces a meeting. The meeting produces a coaching plan. Nothing changes.

Here's the sequence that plays out in most organizations using engagement survey platforms: Engineering scores 3.2/5 on "my manager communicates expectations clearly." HR flags it. The manager gets a coaching conversation. Three months later, the same question scores 3.4/5. Attrition in that team continues. Why? Because the survey never told you what specific thing is breaking down. Is it that the manager doesn't communicate context before assigning work? That sprint planning decisions get made without the team in the room? A scaled survey response of 3.2 carries zero information about which of those things is happening.

Conversation surfaces what survey forms structurally cannot.

When a Redacted interview asks "Tell me about the last time you felt unclear about what was expected of you," the response is a specific, contextualized account. The follow-up: "What would have made that clearer?": produces a specific, actionable signal. Forms produce distributions across pre-written answer choices. Conversations produce the actual source material. The output from a Redacted cycle reads differently from an engagement report: instead of "communication scores are low in the product team," you get "three recurring themes around how project scope changes are communicated, specifically between Product and Engineering, particularly in the week before sprint close."

Surveys measure what employees are willing to put their name next to.

Even with Culture Amp's anonymization, most employees in a team of eight to fifteen know that a response aggregated from a small group is not truly untraceable. The result: survey data systematically undercounts friction related to direct managers, peer conflicts, and anything that feels unsafe to document. Our Survey vs. Interview Honesty Gap Estimator walks through exactly how much signal is typically suppressed in a conventional survey cycle. Redacted's no-login architecture, audio deletion, and five-response minimum threshold are all designed to remove the structural reasons employees self-censor.

Why employees say different things when they know they actually can't be traced

Every tool claims anonymity. Redacted's is structural: enforced by the system's architecture, not by a policy statement. There are five independent controls, each of which would need to fail simultaneously for any individual to be identifiable.

  1. No Login Required. Employees join via a tokenized link. No email address, employee ID, SSO, or credential of any kind is collected. The system cannot associate a session with a person.
  2. Session Hashing. Each interview session is assigned a random hash that has no relationship to any employee identifier. The link used to join cannot be reverse-mapped to the session data.
  3. Ephemeral Audio Deletion. Raw voice audio is permanently deleted immediately after transcription. Nothing that could identify a voice pattern, dialect, or individual is retained.
  4. Automated PII Scrubbing. Transcripts are processed to remove names, locations, dates, team identifiers, and any other personally identifiable information before entering the analysis pipeline.
  5. Minimum Response Threshold. No team-level report is generated unless at least five employees in that group have completed an interview. Small teams produce no report, protecting employees in intimate departments by design.

Common questions from Culture Amp customers

No. Redacted doesn't replace Culture Amp: it runs alongside it and answers a different question. Your Culture Amp engagement scores track sentiment over time. A Redacted cycle runs when you need to understand what's specifically driving a metric change. Many organizations use both: Culture Amp for recurring benchmarked measurement, Redacted for diagnostic deep-dives when something needs to be understood and fixed.

Redacted is specifically designed to not feel like a survey. There's no login, no form, no rating scale. Employees speak naturally in response to conversational questions, and a typical session runs 8–12 minutes. The format is genuinely different, and organizations with high survey fatigue often see higher Redacted participation for exactly that reason. Use the Friction Risk Scorecard first to assess whether a diagnostic cycle is right for your current situation.

Frame Redacted as the diagnostic layer beneath the measurement layer. Culture Amp tells leadership where engagement is and how it compares to market. Redacted tells leadership what is specifically causing the pattern Culture Amp is measuring. The output isn't a competing score: it's a friction report that gives leaders something concrete to act on. If your Culture Amp eNPS has been declining in Engineering for two quarters, a Redacted cycle in that function produces the specific operational explanation.
